Arguing against a simple representation of ancient Greek and Roman table mannersnin the second century CE, historian Robin Nadeau probes the elite world of Greek and Roman banquets. The well-organized thesis is unveiled in eloquent language,nalbeit in French, couched in abundant Greek and Roman concepts. The introductionnpresents the period known as the Second Sophistic, during which there was muchncultural exchange between the Greeks and the conquering Romans. Chapter 1ndemonstrates the scope of the writings of the three principal sources; Chapter 2nexamines how table manners fit within the social and cultural context of AncientnGreece. The next three chapters describe the discourse on the rituals of eating, thenrelationship between the host and the guests, and the ethics of eating. Chapter 6nthen explores the link between Greek banquets and Roman banquets.
