At 4 o'clock on Wednesday afternoon August 23,1939, orders were received to proceed with the embodiment of the 602 (City of Glasgow) Squadron Auxiliary Air Force within the RAF. 'Notices of Calling Out', prepared some days previously, were despatched late that evening to every member of the AAF and all RAF personnel were recalled from leave. Thus 602 Squadron was 'called up' in anticipation of the outbreak of war. Just less than a year before, with the country awakening to growing threats, a brief change of role for 602 had occurred on November 1,1938 - it was transferred from 2 (Bomber) Group to 22 (Army Cooperation) Group and reequipped with Hawker Hectors. Fortunately in just over two months, a major change of plan and role saw 602 become a fighter squadron and join 13 (Fighter) Group.
