Flying Arado Ar 68 biplanes, Hans-Ekkehard Bob and his classmates mastered the skills vital for a fighter pilot - formation flying and the art of turning tightly without losing height. The latter was essential in combat, for he who lost height in a turn would stand no chance. It was mid-1938 and Hans-Ekkehard (Hans from now on - ED) was under the command of Hubertus von Bonin, who had returned from service with the Condor Legion in Spain and who would go on to command JG54 'Green Hearts' in World War Two.
