One of the most outstanding displays that I recall is the Daily Express Exhibition which took place at Hendon between July 19 and21 in 1951. The main reason for this impression is that it was the first great gathering of vintage aeroplanes to take place after World War Two. A whole new generation was able to see for the first time many of the older types that had survived. The aircraft exhibited were largely civil, and the older RAF types were few in number. Those that were present were hardly in a display condition. On the other hand, the Royal Navy showed off a good selection of wartime machines, and these were far better prepared.
