Warbirds over Wanaka International Airshow 2008 was the eleventh incarnation of this biennial event, and was held over the Easter weekend, from March 21 to 23, at one of the most scenic airfields in the world. Friday was a practice day, and over the following three days the weather swung wildly between 'mid-summer' and 'midwinter' conditions. The crowds were as big for the rehearsal as they were for the two official days. Estimates of visitor numbers vary between 60,000 to 100,000 - though 80,000 is considered a fair total. Saturday got off to a chilly nine-degree start, with low cloud following an overnight storm. Two DH Vampires performed the show's opening sequence as a tight pair formation. The event revolved around several themes, often accompanied by pyrotechnic displays, which greatly added to the atmosphere.
