During World War Two, it was the North American P-51 Mustang that emerged as the legendary US fighter of its time and it had plenty of competition. In the Korean War, the North American F-86 Sabre captured media headlines with its outstanding kill ratio over the Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-15 Fagot. A few years later, the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom dominated the headlines in its duels with the MiG-17 Fresco and MiG-21 Fishbed. During this era, things were a little different in that the F-4 had an equally prominent role in the air-to-ground mission and it was very successful at both.
