Early 1944 was a busy time for 244 Squadron; we converted to the Vickers Wellington XIII in February. This was the 'Stickleback' version of the 'Wimpy', so-called because of the array of dorsal dipole radar aerials. In March our base became the waterless Masirah Island in Oman. No.244's duties included convoy escort and anti-submarine patrols up and down the Persian Gulf.
