Hellcat from the deep

Grumman F6F-3 Hellcat 25910 was raised from the depths of Lake Michigan and onto dry land at Waukegan Harbor, Illinois, on November 30. The remarkably well preserved fighter had been in the water since it came to grief during arntraining accident on January 5,1945. The former VF-38 combat veteran Hellcat was being used for carrier landing qualifications by 24-year-old Lt Walter B Elcock when it slipped off the USS Sable's deck on landing and plummet into thernwater at slow speed. Thankfully the pilot escaped before the aircraft sank.
