It isn't surprising that so many look back on the 1950s as a golden era for British aviation. Boundaries were being extended, problems overcome, and records smashed. The test pilots appeared to be a glamorous elite, some of them - like Roland Beamont and Neville Duke - were already highly regarded for their wartime service. Theirs was a risky occupation, but the desire to achieve compelled them and aircraft manufacturers to constantly renew their efforts.
