One of the most colourful characters to have served in the RAF, Wg Cdr Basil Embry had joined up and undergone pilot training in 1921. His potential was soon recognised and he was rapidly promoted through the ranks. Leading from the front, he took part in some of World War Two's most dangerous sorties before being shot down on the St Omer raid on May 27,1940. He was taken prisoner, but managed to escape by rolling down a large grass bank while being force marched to a camp with other PoWs. Over the next ten weeks, he managed to make his way over to neutral Spain - a journey of over 650 miles -and then back to the UK, via Gibraltar.
