Just over a dozen complete Gladiator Mk.ls are know to have been captured by the Germans by late 1941, and at least ten were made airworthy and employed by the Luftwaffe for towing gliders. The bulk of the aircraft, referred to as 'Glosters' by the Germans, are thought to have fallen into Axis hands when large parts of Russia were overrun during Operation Barbarossa. In all probability, the aircraft were former Latvian examples that had been captured by the Russians in 1940.
