Pleased as he was with the Mosquito bombers at his disposal, Air Vice-Marshal Don Bennett envisaged other tasks for the fast twin. He'd already exploited its performance through the Pathfinder force and his Mosquitos were busy marking targets for Bomber Command across occupied Europe. Bennett, the commander of 8 (Pathfinder Force) Group, wanted to mount small-scale raids to keep striking key targets when they were not being Visited' by Bomber Command's 'heavies'. These precision attacks would also draw off enemy defences from the RAF's primary target for the night - the fast and manoeuvrable Mossie being less vulnerable to night-fighters and a difficult target for flak.
