Against all the odds, Sgt H H 'Kitch' Kitchener of 263 Squadron had achieved a couple of victories over the invading Germans during Britain's futile defence of Norway. The unit's Gloster Gladiators flew operations from a frozen lake at Lesjaskog from late April 1940 but they had taken a mauling. During the withdrawal, the last stragglers of 263 embarked upon the aircraft carrier HMS Glorious, only for it to be sunk on June 8.
