Pioneering monoplane recreated in Germany

Staff at Technikmuseum Hugo Junkers in Dessau, Germany, have completed work on a full-scale replica of the experimental Junkers J1, the first all-metal aircraft to fly. The original J1 was given to the Deutsches Museum in Munich in 1926. Like many other aircraft and exhibits, it was destroyed by bombs during World War Two. The team at Dessau, responsible for the superb replica of the Junkers F13, was determined to recreate the earlier machine, which first flew in December 1915. Around 30 volunteers built the new exhibit. The project required 10,200 hours of work. With no original construction drawings available, the first stage was to create new ones, based on archive images and a preserved three-way plan. The monoplane can now be seen alongside the F13 replica and an original Junkers Ju 52.
