摘要

The largely intact remains of former USAAF Lockheed P-38F Lightning 41-7677 have been scheduled for protection by Cadw (the historic environment division of the Welsh government). Its final resting place - in northwest Wales - is set to be the first legally designated military crash site in the UK, and will be safeguarded for historic and archaeological interest. Known today as 'The Maid of Harlech', the aircraft crashed just off the coast of Harlech on September 27,1942. When both engines failed due to a fuel shortage, 24-year-old pilot 2nd Lt Robert F Elliott of the 49th Fighter Squadron, 14th Fighter Group, opted to crash land. The machine failed to reach the beach and plunged into water just off the shore. Robert was unhurt in the incident, but sadly lost his life over North Africa a few months later.
