Stead Field Speedsters

Having just completed its 55th year at Stead Field, north of Reno, Nevada, the Reno National Championship Air Races is currently the only event of its type in the world. Though there are various classes of air racing globally, for several decades Reno has been the only place to see Unlimited aircraft in action; they are generally ex-World War Two fighters, some highly modified to attain speeds of more than 100mph beyond their original design specifications. In addition, the annual event also features sport, biplane and formula one air racing, as well as solo and formation aerobatic displays, modern military flyovers, static aircraft exhibits and ground activities. The hugely exciting competition involves several different oval-shaped courses varying in length from around 3 miles to 8 miles. Victory in the 2018 Unlimited Gold Race went to Joel Swager in the Sanders Aeronautics Hawker Sea Fury Dreadnought at an average speed of 417.735mph. This was the third championship win for the aircraft, but the first for Swager.
