Over the years I have built lots of kits, the majority of which were just for fun. They have included both indoor and outdoor freeflight (rubber power, gas and electric), U-Con-trol and most of the R/C persuasions as they came into vogue. A conservative guess would be somewhere around a thousand. That number is for kits only and would not include the airplanes I have built from magazine plans nor those designed for a special event or for publication. I quote these numbers so you will be aware of my background when I say I think the best kits I have ever built have come from the fertile brain of Tom Herr! The kits Tom produced are light and strong with absolutely perfect laser cutting. Each part was cut from the proper wood and the designing made everything fit without resorting to jigs or fixtures! His rubber powered Piper Cub was my first adventure with Tom's airplanes and I was amazed when the two wings were joined to each side of the fuselage and fit perfectly! Those wings were dead straight and even had the proper dihedral! As they came along I've built many Herr kits, and every one was as near perfect as he could make them. His little Speed 280 powered 3-channel Cub is still one of my favorite small R/C airplanes. The next time you see Tom, tell him thanks and ask him if he is going to digitize and kit some of the old timers.
