Ihave a degree in journalism and a background in media, so you might expect my first summer job to have been delivering newspapers. You would be wrong. Right after turning 16, my mother drove me to the local Baskin-Robbins, and that's where I got my first summer job. The pay-$5.75 an hour-was, for the time, OK, and the benefits-free ice cream-were... tasty. It was fairly hectic; summer nights at a Long Island ice cream shop were a proverbial perfect storm: Weather hovered between 70 and 90 degrees, in a place surrounded by beaches and filled with people who thought nothing of feeding their already pudgy kids a four-scoop sundae at 8:30 p.m.
