North South Fire Safety Week 2009 was officially launched on Monday October 5 by Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) and the Republic of Ireland's Department of Environment, Heritage and Local GovernmentrnThe main message to the public is that: 'smoke alarms are life savers, but only if they work.' Everyone is reminded that having a smoke alarm fitted in their home is not enough, smoke alarms need to be checked every week to make sure they will activate in the event of a fire.rnFire Safety Week provides the opportunity for cross-border cooperation by working together on the same fire safety issues that affect everyone in Eire and Northern Ireland.
