'In the zone', but which one?

The argument that there are differing levels of hazard and risk at the many thousands of operational incidents attended by firefighters is unquestionable. On each separate occasion, that the risk to which firefighters are exposed diminishes over time, with distance, and varies with task demands, is also an undeniable truth. In this paper, I will argue that when it comes to describing these boundaries -boundaries that place different demands on individual firefighters, as well as their supervisors, managers and commanders -our current language and practice lacks synergy.
