Psychology of incident command: the research results

Decision making is a core feature of incident command which can have far reaching consequences. Given this, it is surprising that when you look through the literature, there is relatively little research on how fire incident commanders make decisions. This left a gap in our knowledge to how specific decision processes might actually affect us during incident command. The incident command project team, led by CFO Simon Pilling, seized the opportunity to bridge this gap (see page 50). The team collaborated with Cardiff University to explore the psychology of incident command with two main aims. Firstly, to find ways of practically supporting incident commanders making operational decisions, which would improve both firefighter and public safety.
