Glyn Evans notes the progress that has been made in reducing fire deaths but asks whether - with the new legislation now in place - the government is taking a back seat as far as fire safety enforcement of commercial premises is concerned. As I approach my final retirement date and with the Fire Safety Order now in place, I have found time to reflect on the last 37 years that I have spent - either in the fire service or working closely with it in my role as fire safety adviser to the Fire Brigades Union. The main topic of this reflection is the enforcement role of the fire service, and what it now appears to mean to ministers at Communities and Local Government (CLG).
