Two London office buildings designed by award-winning architects Allies and Morrison - Bankside 2 and 3 - are using 53,000m of Draka's zero Halogen, low smoke (OHLS) Firetufplus cabling as part of a fire and voice alarm system installed by Essex-based electrical contractor, E A Electrical. The ten-storey buildings, which are located adjacent to the Tate Modern and Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, have a combined floor space more than 38,000m~2. The cable used is compliant with BS 5839-1:2002, but actually exceeds the requirements demanded by the standard. Tests by the LPCB (Loss Prevention Certification Board) and BASEC (British Approvals Service for Cables) show the cable offers 60 minutes of fire and mechanical protection, followed by 60 minutes of fire, mechanical impact and water protection. E A Electrical's contracts director, Terry Burkin explains why the Firetufplus cable is used. "We have established that OHLS cables do not emit halogen gases and [they] burn without producing large amounts of dense smoke.
