Flea Collars could provide the surprising solution to the expensive problem of false alarms caused by thunder flies or thrips ―a problem which affects many areas of the UK during the summer. A trial, launched by Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service in 2003, has shown that the chemicals used in pet flea collars can repel thrips from smoke detectors, dramatically reducing the number of false alarms caused by such flies. Under the initiative, a total of 22 collars containing the chemical diazinon were placed around smoke detectors in seven separate buildings in the county―including a 17th century house, a residential home, a sports centre, a youth hostel and an agricultural college―for a four-month period in the summer of 2003. The collars were used on detectors in specific areas known to be susceptible to thrips. None of the detectors fitted with the collars were subject to a false activation during the trial period.
