Technical committee to consider new safety measures after Belgian care home blaze

A government committee in Belgium is due to meet this month to develop additional fire safety standards for care homes after nine elderly people died in an accidental fire at a retirement home on 5 August. The incident happened at the Kanunnik Triest home in the town of Melle, situated about 30 miles west of Brussels. Many of the 90 residents in the home were asleep when the fire - thought to have been caused by an overheated electrical device - broke out in a wing on the first floor.
