West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service in northern England is taking a lead into the future with its new Watch Manager Development Programme based around transformational leadership and coaching. Recent studies carried out in the metropolitan brigade have shown that the job of a firefighter, crew and watch manager is different to what it was 30 years ago. As a result, the fire service has updated its development programme. For watch managers who are substantive in post, as well as those coming through the promotion system, the service has implemented new training programmes, giving staff members the support and skills necessary to tackle the challenges that face them.
