Ninety Firefighters in the USA lost their lives while on duty during 2009, according to a new report from the US Fire Administration (USFA). Despite the significant losses, USFA says the total number of fatalities in 2009 was one of the lowest in more than 30 years and that there has been a 14% reduction in such deaths over the past decade. There were six incidents in which two or more firefighters were killed. Some 16 personnel died in wildfire operations, 15 while travelling to or from an emergency, and 10 during training activities. Heart attacks were the most frequent cause of death .
