While the final decision about individual fire alarm panel and detectors might best be left to a technical representative of the prospective buyer, end users need at least to be aware of the options available and overall costs of ownership over, say, a 10-year period. Many small and medium sized enterprises, and even some larger companies with in-house fire expertise, appear to be concerned only with minimum legal compliance, yet still end up with a greatly over-specified system for this purpose. It can be sensible to install more than the minimum, but the purpose of this should be explained to non-technical owners, along with future benefits or cost.
