AS AN insurance broker, whenever you speak to an insurer about unoccupied premises, it's very much along the lines of when you take your car to the garage and the mechanic goes 'oof! Talk to an insurer about an unoccupied property and the first response is a deep intake of breath! Ian Lyons and John Lennon of security company Vigilance Properties spoke, as Vigilance focuses on illegitimate pre-occupation of vacant properties, specifically by the traveller community, which has become an endemic problem in the last year. Mr Lyons gave examples of incidents in the past six months, while Mr Lennon gave a short history of the company, with commercial squatting a big-ticket issue nationally affecting landlords and businesses.
