The UK Approach to Firefighter Safety in Structure Fires

We all acknowledge that military success in battle needs, amongst many factors, innovation, courage, organisation, command, control and discipline. I would argue that the fire service success on our fireground needs similar qualities. Command, control and discipline are three factors that are not only important in ensuring success, they are also crucial if we are to minimise harm to our own personnel. Such an approach should not be thought to stifle our ability to take risks where such action is necessary to save life. We need to recognise that teamwork and both self-discipline and organisational discipline are essential to achieving our objectives in a reasonably safe manner.
