Smoke Characterization Project: Scientists say smoke is highly complex, unique

This past spring, Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) with the support of the Fire Protection Research Foundation (FPRF), released test results from the Smoke Characterization Project, which UL says will improve fire scientists' understanding of modern fire hazards. Representatives from the two organizations and a technical panel of other outside experts teamed up to learn more about the physical characteristics of smoke produced by various burning materials in different types of fires (Figure I). Some $700,000 was invested to conduct the study and secure the latest scientific measurement equipment.
