It is obvious that the selection process is not an exact science. There are too many variables and unknowns. When adequate laboratory testing is not practical, the common approach is to factor what is known with what needs to be achieved and make a selection based on benchmark installations or from others who have similar experiences. It is almost like practicing medicine; diagnose and prescribe. Then adjust if the results are not satisfactory. As a filter doctor would say "take two cartridges, and call me in the morning."
