Tirrenia monohulls towed to Turkish scrapyard

Shortly before the sale of Tirrenia was confirmed in July, the administrator of the Italian ferry company confirmed that the five largest fast passenger/vehicle ferries in the fleet had been sold. Four of the vessels, Fincantieri MDV 3000 monohulls Aries, Capricorn, Scorpio and Taurus, were delivered to Tirrenia in 1998 and 1999. The fifth vessel, Rodriquez TMV 101 monohull Scatto, was delivered in 1994. The disposal of vessels also included Rodriquez TMV 101 Guizzo, which originally entered service with Tirrenia in 1993 but was later transferred to subsidiary company Siremar. The receiver refused to disclose who the new owner or owners were but by early August, four of the ferries, Aries, Capricorn, Taurus and Scatto had arrived at a scrapyard in Aliaga, Turkey. Scorpio and Guizzo were expected to follow them. All six monohulls had been laid up in ports around Italy for several years. The first of the MDV 3000s to be withdrawn, Aries, had been berthed in Naples since 2003. The following year Taurus was laid up in Genoa.
