English philosopher Francis Bacon understood that knowledge is power. It's an assertion that could be the mantra for the founders of the Global Maritime Knowledge Hub in Norway - a strikingly ambitious initiative to propel Norway to the status of global leader in maritime knowledge. The. Oslo Maritime Network (OMN) started the ball rolling in June 2008 with the drive to establish as many as 20 new maritime professorships. The Norwegian Shipowners' Association (NSA) was quick to come on board and the project went national.rnSo far, 12 professorships are confirmed. Several are in the final stages of negotiation and reaching the goal of 20 is no mean feat. "It's definitely the highest number of research positions ever made in Norway," professor Torger Reve of the BI Norwegian School of Management tells Fairplay, adding, "even internationally it's high." To put the fig-rnure into perspective, Singapore proudly appointed three professorships recently.
