South Africa has by far the largest and most developed economy in Africa; it is often referred to as the engine of growth for the rest of Africa. The services, mining, and manufacturing sectors drive the country's economy: GDP per capita for 2011 was estimated at about $8,000, which ranks alongside other middle-income countries such as Chile, Mexico, Hungary, and Malaysia. Further, the country has the most advanced financial system in sub-Saharan Africa, and compares with some of the best industrialised financial systems of the world.
