Norwegian marine insurers are major players globally and write 25% of P&l (liability) and 14% of Hull premiums. Norway has increased market share for P&l in recent years. The question is whether the maritime cluster has given underwriters based in the country a competitive edge. During the pioneering period for oil production in Norway, Americans were brought in as consultants. In 1977, Red Adair was contracted to the North Sea to cap the second biggest blowout in history at Ekofisk. Thirty-three years later during the Deepwater Horizon/ Macondo accident, Norwegian companies were contracted by Americans to assist in capping the biggest blowout ever.
