SA expands coal export routes

A lengthy battle involving some of the world's biggest coal companies and the South African government over expanding the country's export capacity appears to have been resolved, reports IHS McCloskey in its Coal Report. In late April, state-owned rail operator Transnet pledged to invest 50Bn rand ($6.4Bn) in the coal export line to Richards Bay and said this would increase annual capacity by 44% from 68M tonnes in 2011-12 to 98M tonnes by 2018-19.
