US ports boosted by bonus dredging funds

US ports will receive $1Bn for harbour and channel maintenance dredging in fiscal year 2014 as part of a government-wide spending package. The Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2 014, which was signed into law by President Barack Obama on 17 January, also increases federal grants for ports and other transport infrastructure projects by 20%, to $600M. The amount dedicated to maintenance dredging - considered vital to keeping US ports competitive internationally - is 12% more than proposed by Obama's 2014 budget request.
