Port of Jacksonville secures dredging funding

The Florida Department of Transportation has allocated USD35.3 million to a Jacksonville harbor deepening project to dredge the harbor to 14.3 m along an 17.7 km stretch to the Blount Island Terminal by 2023. Jacksonville port officials believe the USD484 million dredging project is necessary to keep the port competitive with neighbours to the north in Savannah, Georgia, also currently dredging to 47ft, and Charleston, South Carolina, currently dredging to 16m. JAXPORT's newest influx of cash will be spent on the second of three contracts to complete its digging to 14.3 m.
