Reducing offshore cyber risks

As US regulators work on a strategy to address the risks of a cyber attack on the maritime sector, the offshore industry is making sure that as much attention is paid to drillships and oil rigs as is given to ports and other ships. Following President Barack Obama's lead in making cyber security a top priority, the US Coast Guard (USCG) plans to provide a draft of its cyber security strategy this summer, with a completed report to be released in 2016. The guidelines are intended to help ports, terminals, and carriers create a cyber risk management strategy. "As mariners, we're pretty good at dealing with risk, [such as] storms at sea and navigating through shoal waters, but every time we add a computer system to the mix, we increase our vulnerability [to cyber attack]", said Andrew Tucci, chief ofUSCG Office of Port and Facility Compliance.
