The European Union (EU) climate chief has urged the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to set a 2018 target for reducing shipping's carbon dioxide emissions. Jos Delbeke, director-general at the European Commission (EC) climate action directorate, pointed to some unease within the EU that such a target has not yet been set in shipping. He added that this had been demonstrated by the recent vote in the European Parliament to include shipping in the EU emissions trading scheme from 2023, in the absence of acceptable alternative proposals from the IMO by 2021.
