US sentences two more crew members for sea dumping

A US federal judge has sent a ship's chief engineer to jail for oil pollution crimes, the second such sentencing in less than a month. Cassius Samson, 52, from the Philippines, was ordered by US District Judge Malcolm Howard on 7 December 2016 to serve 12 months in prison for trying to cover up dumping tonnes of oil sludge and machinery bilge water into the Atlantic Ocean. He had been working on the general cargo ship Ocean Hope as its second engineer before the vessel arrived at the port of Wilmington, North Carolina, in July 2015.
