The shipbuilding and shiprepair industries have accident incidence rates almost twice that of all other manufacturing, according to the UK's Health & Safety Executive (HSE), which wants yards to use 'best practice' and work together to reduce injuries, a British approach that could be equally effective at yards in other countries Meeting in late April, the HSE's Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Health & Safety Consultative Committee (SSHSCC) was addressed by Justin McCracken, deputy director of the HSE, on the benefits of working together to reduce accidents. This 50th meeting of the SSHSCC was hosted by Fleet Support Ltd (FSL), and a range of topics were discussed, but the main issue addressed how industry players might work together to tackle causes of accidents and ill health.
