Leaving aside the environmental aspects, the main problem of TBT coatings were their effectiveness compared with other available products. With all major coatings manufacturers producing varieties of TBT products there was just no need to research alternatives while its use was legal. As soon as the ban became inevitable, paint manufacturers have by and large seized the opportunity to kick start research and development after the years of stagnation of the TBT era. In most common products now, copper has replaced tin as the main biocide but questions about its continued use are already being posed.
