While marine engine suppliers are providing users with competitive solutions to meet IMO Tier II emission limits due in two years' time, much greater challenges lie ahead in the shape of the envisaged Tier III regime. This would require an 80% cut in NOx emissions relative to current levels. Although only projected for designated marine sectors, or emission control areas (ECAs), from 2016, Tier III is seen as a pointer to the future. Goeran Hellen, head of exhaust emission control in Waertsilae's 4-stroke R&D department, expects the the standards to be extended to the Baltic, the North Sea, Tokyo Bay and US and Canadian coastal waters in the future.
