Japanese operator NYK chose Earth Day last month to unveil details of the design of a highly efficient and environment-friendly container ship. The design for the NYK Super Eco Ship 2030 was created by MTI, an NYK subsidiary charged with making use of advances in technology, along with Garroni Progetti, an Italian ship designer and Elomatic Marine, a Finnish marine-technology consultant.Among the new technologies used in the 8,000teu ship concept are LNG-based fuel cells, solar cells and wind power, which together would significantly reduce emissions compared with a vessel powered by a conventional direct-drive diesel propulsion system. Lightweight hull materials and technologies to reduce drag would help reduce the power demand. Of particular interest is the bow configuration, which features a narrow web that connects the hull and the bulbous bow.
