Sometimes the codes seem completely unreasonable. "I have had situations where jobs have had to be canceled," says Stephen Frost, president of Stamford Tent & Party Rental, Stamford, Conn. "For one tent installation, the building inspector said we had to meet a 240km/hr wind load. That's not possible, but this guy was standing firm. We told the client, 'Look, there is no tent made that does that. Frankly, there are not many buildings made that do that.' Apparently, this guy has just got it in for tenting." Another inspector seemed to have it in for canopies. Byron Yonce, president of Urbana, Ill.-based TCT&A Industries says his company installed a large canopy over a beer garden in 2002. Then, not long after the 2003 nightclub fires, code inspectors dropped in to say that because of a two-foot-long skirt on the canopy, the structure qualified as a building and would require a building permit and engineer drawings. TCT&A yanked the skirt off, magically transforming the structure back into a canopy.
