Council Approves Indian Ocean Fisheries Agreement

The Council approved the Indian Ocean fisheries agreement on behalf of the European Community on 29 September. The agreement, signed in 2006, establishes a new regional fisheries management organisation in charge of guaranteeing the conservation and management of non-tuna high seas species in the southern Indian Ocean. The Community has fishing interests in this area, where it also has the status of coastal state by virtue of the presence of the Island of Reunion. It is therefore obliged, under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, to cooperate with the other parties involved in resource management and conservation in this region.
