France recommends creation of European climate research centre

France has proposed the establishment of a European research centre to address the challenges of climate change. The participants, including 15 ministers and secretaries of state, discussed the expectations of the users of the GMES (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security) programme, which has two components, civil and military. This joint initiative by the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Union aims to streamline the European activities and means in the field of planetary observation. GMES is particularly interested in the marine environment, air quality, management of emergency situations and climate change. "We must provide long and medium-term funding to ensure we continue to receive data" on all these subjects, stressed the French minister.
