Jury recognises climate change projects

At a VIP event in the European Parliament, the former General Secretary of the Soviet Union's Communist Party, Mikhail Gorbachev, received the Energy Globe Award. This ninth edition of the awards, on 26-27 May, took place in the Parliament, as it did in 2007. The awards aim to focus attention on best practices in the fight against climate change, also using prominent VIPs. The 1,000 participants at this year's ceremony included former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, former Indian Environment Minister Maneka Gandhi, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and Slovene Prime Minister Janez Jansa. It was hosted by Parliament President Hans-Gert Pottering (EPP-ED, Germany). There were performances by singers Dionne Warwick, Zuc-chero and Alanis Morissette as well as a guest appearance by Indian Bollywood actor Aamir Khan. Luxembourg actress Desiree Nos-busch was master of ceremony at the awards.
